Lemon Vinegar Cleaning Solution | AmandaNaturally.comI can’t remember where I first saw this idea, probably somewhere on pinterest, but I can’t take credit for coming up with it! Others have done it before me, but I love this little project so much that I had to share it with you!

Do you squeeze lemon into your water? What do you do with the lemon after the fact? I keep a lemon in my water all day, and then it goes in the compost. Which is preferable to going into the garbage, but wouldn’t it be even better if you could use it once more before composting it? Well look no further as I have the perfect project for you!

Lemon is a powerful de-greaser and anti-bacterial, so it’s a great ingredient for cleaning products. Combine lemon with vinegar, the most useful of all cleaning ingredients, and you create a potent cleaner that not only degreases and shines, but also kills unwanted microbes without any nasty chemicals! Here’s how:

Lemon Vinegar Cleaning Solution | AmandaNaturally.comGrab a large jar or bowl and fill it up about half way with plain old white vinegar. Store it somewhere that is an easy reach from your prep area in the kitchen. Every time you use a lemon – either for cooking or in your water – when you’re done, simply throw it into the vinegar. Once you fill up the jar to the top (the lemons should be completely submerged in water), let it sit for 2 weeks. Remove the lemons from the vinegar (now you can compost them!) and voila – you have yourself an amazing cleaning product that is effective and also smells lovely!

You can use it on its own for the kitchen and bathroom, or combine with additional ingredients such as those found in my Bathroom Cleaner!

There you have it! A simple way to reuse leftover lemon peels to keep your house clean and smelling great!

Our Trip To The Stoddart Family Farm

Last Saturday was my husband’s birthday and the previous Tuesday was my birthday – so to celebrate, we spent Saturday afternoon at an open house at a local farm. Doesn’t everyone celebrate birthdays that way?? 

We have been on the hunt for a local farm that raises 100% grassfed beef and pastured pork, from which to buy a ¼, ½ or whole cow and a ½ or whole hog. Why you ask? Well for a few reasons. 

  1. From a cost perspective, nothing compares. When you buy a ¼ cow, it ends up being $4.99/lb for all the different cuts. That means even the steaks are $4.99/lb! 
  2. You can select the types of cuts you want and you will get all of the odds and ends, including back fat (for making tallow), bones and organs. (You don’t have to take these bits, but eating snout-to-tail is not only ethical, it’s delicious and incredibly healthy)
  3. It is important to us to support local farmers.
  4. We want to be connected with where we get our food from. It can be hard to “meet your meat” but we believe it’s an important part of the process. If you see the animals alive, you can’t help but be respectful and grateful for the life that was given, to allow you to live your life.  

I can’t remember how I stumbled across these guys but oh boy am I glad I did. Harry and Silvia Stoddart from The Stoddart Family Farm are the real deal when it comes to raising animals properly. Two incredibly intelligent people – Harry worked in corporate finance and Silvia has a background in biochemistry – their passion for ethical meat production was inspiring. 

Harry calls both Joel Salatin from Polyface Farm and Allan Savory of the Savory Institute his mentors and he has implemented many of their farming practices on his acreage. You might remember Joel Salatin from Food Inc. – he’s the farmer who always talks about allowing the pig to express its pigness! He has developed a rotational grazing system on his farm that not only encourages the health of both the animals and the pasture, but results in an exponential increase in profit per acre because it’s being used so strategically. He sums it up on his website in this creative and intriguing way:

For context, please understand that we don’t do anything conventionally. We haven’t bought a bag of chemical fertilizer in half a century, never planted a seed, own no plow or disk or silo—we call those bankruptcy tubes. We practice mob stocking herbivorous solar conversion lignified carbon sequestration fertilization with the cattle. The Eggmobiles follow them, mimicking egrets on the rhinos’ nose. The laying hens scratch through the dung, eat out the fly larvae, scatter the nutrients into the soil, and give thousands of dollars worth of eggs as a byproduct of pasture sanitation. Pastured broilers in floorless pasture schooners move every day to a fresh paddock salad bar. Pigs aerate compost and finish on acorns in forest glens. It’s all a symbiotic, multi-speciated synergistic relationship-dense production model that yields far more per acre than industrial models. And it’s all aromatically and aesthetically romantic.

Allan Savory is doing incredible work rehabilitating the earth in Zimbabwe. About two thirds of the earth is not arable – so it cannot be used for growing crops. When we try to play God and manipulate the earth to grow crops on such land, it is an incredible drain on resources such as water, it causes more damage to the earth because fertilizers are heavily relied upon and it exacerbates drought and nutrient-deficient soils because no animals are there to return the nutrients to the soil. According to the Savory Institue: 

For centuries we believed livestock were a major cause of desertification, but Savory’s research showed that the cause lay in how those livestock were managed. His solution involved mimicking the behavior of the formerly vast herds of wild grazing animals he had witnessed as a young biologist. He devised a simple method any pastoralist can use to move massive amounts of carbon and water from the atmosphere back to the soil and begin reversing thousands of years of human-caused desertification – on the scale required, which no technology imaginable can accomplish. In the process, we can feed more people and enhance societal well-being.

Both Salatin and Savory are going against the grain – literally. They are combining the wisdom of our ancestors who had to live in rhythm with the earth, with advances in technology to feed the world and rehabilitate the earth at the same time. 

According to Harry, there are 3 pillars of raising animals for consumption:

  1. It must be healthy for the animal.
  2. It must be healthy for the human who will consume it.
  3. It must be healthy for the environment.

Every decision they make at Stoddart Family Farm has to be consistent with all 3 pillars and because of this, they raise incredibly healthy animals whose nutritional quality is unparalleled, and their pasture is a lush and diverse ecosystem full of frogs (a major indicator of pasture health), bugs and a variety of plant matter.

Last Saturday they had an open house, and we happened to be around, so we drove the 45 minutes northeast of Whitby to the far side of Lake Scugog. Boy we were in for a treat! Harry took us on a tour all over the farm, including out to all the pastures. It was a beautiful day, we were out there for over an hour, and we loved every second of it! Here are some photos I snapped that day – bear with me, they are taken on my phone.

Every day they move the coop to new grass so the chickens have plenty of bugs and plants to eat. You can see the path of the coop. After about 1 week the grass is completely regrown and you can’t even see where the coop was.

This little guy was less than 24 hours old! They don’t castrate their bulls, so nature takes its course on the pasture. Which results in a bigger herd. If anything happens during the birth, the cow can still be processed for meat. Sounds harsh, but it’s actually better than in nature, where much of the animal may go to waste instead of being used as food.

As we left, we felt incredibly inspired and grateful. We have our very own version of Polyface Farm at Stoddart Family Farm. That night we cooked up some of the most delicious burgers we’ve had in a long time, with ground beef purchased from the farm. We immediately put in an order for an entire cow and pig – which we will be sharing with my parents and some of our close friends. And while I can’t vouch for the pork yet, if the beef was any indicator, we are in for a treat.

Homemade Deodorant

Homemade Deodorant | AmandaNaturally.comI promise you I have not gone crazy (well maybe that’s still up for debate depending on where you’re at in your health and wellness journey) – homemade deodorant is not only possible, it’s easy and pretty darn effective! Let me explain.

I began a transition to clean, chemical-free personal care products over 6 years ago and for the most part, it was pretty easy. There are great make up alternatives and oils are fabulous for cleansing/moisturizing. However I always struggled with deodorant.

As a teen I was suuuuper sweaty. Like embarassingly sweaty. I didn’t mind sweating when I played sports, but sweating through a sweatshirt on a cold day sucked big time. Hardcore anti-perspirant was my godsend – and I mean seriously hardcore. I got the over the counter pure-aluminum stuff that I could only apply once a week, otherwise my skin would get really damaged. Every other day I used regular, Dove anti-perspirant, which was filled with aluminum, fragrance (read: phthalates) and other weird ingredients. I’m cringing just thinking about what my toxin exposure used to be!

Once I started learning about the risks associated with anti-perspirant, I immediately stopped the hardcore stuff, but hung on to the Dove. I eventually switched to Tom’s “natural” anti-perspirant, which had way less junk in it, but still contained aluminum so it helped with the sweating. Over the last few years I’ve dabbled in a variety of natural deodorants, but was never satisfied. They would be fine for a few hours, but if I got sweaty, I always noticed a slight odour which I knew was partly my body reacting with the ingredients in the deodorant.

Simultaneous to this anti-perspirant / deodorant adventure, I was also deep in my healing journey and discovering how my body was responding to different foods. About 18 months ago I realized that the amount I was sweating during the day was dramatically less than what it used to be – I can only attribute this to healing my body. That’s when I finally got off the anti-perspirants and really got to start playing around with the natural deodorants. This past winter I often wouldn’t even wear deodorant, except to go to the gym. However as the temperatures have started to climb I knew I needed to finally figure this out. After playing around with a few different “natural options” out there, I still wasn’t having any success. My dear friend and fellow nutritionist Jenn from Jennifer Potter Health recommended a product that she swore by. It was pretty much coconut oil, baking soda and some essential oils. I kept meaning to find out the exact brand, and then I read The Purely Primal Skincare Guide by Liz Wolfe and she mentioned using those ingredients directly, in lieu of any pre-made deodorant. I figured, well it couldn’t hurt to give it a go – since I definitely have coconut oil and baking soda on hand, all the time!

Well lo and behold it freakin worked! Obviously I should have know, since Liz knows everything about natural skin care, but for some reason I was skeptical. I tried simply swiping some coconut oil and then dabbing some baking soda on top and was thrilled with the results. So I took it one (tiny) step further. Here’s my recipe:

Homemade Deodorant 

Supplies

  1. 2 small jars (mason or other – I got mine from Dollarama)
  2. baking soda
  3. coconut oil
  4. essential oil of choice (I used lavender)

Directions

  1. Warm the coconut oil enough so you can stir it very easily. Make sure it doesn’t get hot, and if it does, let it cool before moving to the next step.
  2. Add 10 drops of your favourite essential oil (I like lavender) per ½ cup oil, and stir it in well.
  3. Pour into a jar and let cool.
  4. Pour some baking soda into another small jar, for ease of use.
  5. When applying, swipe some lavender coconut oil under your arms, followed by a few dabs of baking soda. Voila!

Important Notes:

  • Excessive sweating and body odour are not armpit problems, they indicate problems with nutrition, dehydration, blood sugar dysregulation, digestion and/or stress. Addressing these issues is critical for normalizing sweat function/smell. For example, if I eat too much sugar, or eat goat cheese, I notice a change in odour for a few days.
  • Sweat itself does not smell, instead it is the bacteria on your skin reacting with the sweat that causes odour. So by supporting the health of our microbiome (starting with gut health) and not applying toxins to our skin that kills off the beneficial bacteria, you will start to make changes that will reduce and eliminate body odour.
  • Sweating in general, is actually really important. It’s the body’s natural way of cooling itself down, detoxifying and means you have good circulation. Embrace it!
  • You will always sweat when you exercise. This is normal and desired!
  • Do not apply deodorant on freshly shaven skin – it can cause irritation.
